Just Being Gay Can Almost Cost You Your Life: Gay Couple Attacked with Hot Boiling Water

By  |

Earlier this week Marquez Tolbert gave an interview with Channel 2’s Nicole Carr to recall the events that should be considered a hate crime towards him and his boyfriend. The interview was painful to watch as Tolbert’s describes the night of the attack by someone he knew.

martin-luther-blackwell-mugshot-650On February 12th  Marquez Tolbert (in the featured picture up top) and his boyfriend Anthony Gooden lay asleep when they were awoken to scalding hot water on them both. Their attacker Martin Luther Blackwell who at the time was dating Gooden’s mom was apparently disgusted by their relationship. A man who’s name is similar to the late Dr. Martin Luther King is disgusted by someone’s sexual orientation shows how much work we still have to do even in 2016. I don’t even have the words. This man said that he couldn’t stand to see two men laying together so he took it upon himself to be hateful. Sounds familiar? When the oppress become the oppressors but that’s another story I will save for a later date. Let me just be clear there are plenty more angry men like Blackwell and it’s up to us to stop them.

“They was stuck together like two hot dogs, so I poured a little hot water on them and helped them out,” Blackwell told investigators. “They was stuck like two hot dogs. They’ll be alright, it was just a little hot water.” Project Q Atlanta

Well, that little hot water caused second & third-degree burns and left Marquez and Anthony at Grady Hospital for more than a week. This man who didn’t even live at the residence felt it necessary to boil water and pour it on this woman’s child? Parents protect your children. Stories like this are not unusual as I receive them in my email every week. Either they are abused at home, school or put on the streets it’s real trust me. I’ve been fortunate enough to not experience some of these things but I do sometimes wish my family was more accepting when I was younger. This would’ve let me be more open with them and kept me from making stupid mistakes.

I’m thankful that Anthony’s mother stood by him and accepted her son. Not too many mothers would allow their son to bring their boyfriends in a house and let them sleep. I commend her and I wish more would be open to this. If you don’t love them someone else will and it won’t be the love that you can provide.

Marquez & Anthony will recover from this with the help of good people by their side. I will definitely keep them in my prayers. I also pray for the mother because I do not want her to feel as if it were her fault. It wasn’t and no one could have predicted this. We have to also be mindful of others hateful comments towards any group of people.

A GoFundMe has been started for Tolbert’s burn recovery CLICK HERE to support him. I encourage all the Jays to donate anything they can and I will as well.
